CLASSIFICATION OF MORTAR part-2

Classification of   Mortar:-

       Mortar are classified in the basis of the following:

                 1. Bulk density
                 2. Kind of binding materials
                 3. Nature of application
                 4. Special mortar

Properties of a good mortar:-


  • It should be capable of developing good adhesion with the building unit such as bricks, stones etc
  • It should be capable of developing the design stresses
  • It should be cheap
  • It should be durable
  • It should be easily workable
  • It should set quickly so that speed in connection may beachieved

Use of Mortar:-

  • To bind the building units such as bricks and stones
  • To carry out pointing and plaster work on exposed surfaces of masonry.
  • To form an even and soft bending layer for building units.
  • To form joints of pipes
  • To hyde the open joint of brick works and stone works

Function of sand in mortar:-

1. Bulk of Mortar mainly consist of sand, hence cost is reduced
2. Settings
3. Shrinkage gets avoided due to sand.
4. Strength is imparted because of sand.
